St. John’s Mercy Medical Center – Heart HospitalSt. Louis, Missouri
St. John’s Mercy Medical Center is a 979-bed facility located in metropolitan St. Louis, Missouri. To meet the community’s growing need for advanced heart care, the organization recently opened a state-of-the-art, nine-level heart hospital--the region’s first facility devoted exclusively to heart and vascular care.
In addition to 96 private patient rooms, the new 340,000 square-foot hospital provides accommodations for family members. It also features a Level I Trauma Center with separate ambulance and walk-in entrances on the first floor. The top two floors are private practice physician offices, and the middle floors contain flexible acuity private rooms.
Architectural firm Christner, Inc. worked closely with the St. John’s staff during the planning and design process. “Creating an inviting heart hospital for the patients was an important aspect to the entire planning process,” stated Grace Corbin, Christner, Inc.
An important goal in the design and construction of the facility was to create a comfortable healing environment for patients. To accomplish this, St. John’s teamed with Nemschoff and furniture dealer Modern Business Interiors. Michele Gramelspacher, Manager of Public Relations at St. John’s, said, “We were confident in the role Nemschoff played in the design and completion of this facility. The clean lines and comfort level of this furniture are important elements in the healing environment that we are creating for our patients.”
Lynda Alexander at Modern Business Interiors added, “Nemschoff furniture was selected for this hospital because of the quality, design and lifetime warranty associated with the entire product line.” All patient rooms are standardized with a SleepOver Flop Sofa and Karisma Wallsaver Recliner. Torii and Cities Uptown lounge seating solutions were selected for all public areas, and Marsack II was specified for the emergency waiting area. Riva lounge seating was chosen for the main entrance, which allows visual connection to three levels while conveying a sense of warmth and light expressive of the patient-focused mission.
“We have been very pleased with the quality and functionality Nemschoff has provided for our facility,” said Gramelspacher. “The success of this project is evidenced by the many compliments we’ve received from patients and visitors on the furnishings.”
